As drivers cross the causeway onto Marrowstone Island, a small triangular piece of land with a “Welcome to Marrowstone” sign greets them. The land belongs to the State of Washington, and was approved by the Dept. of Transportation as a welcoming garden with the condition that the state would not have to maintain it. In the mid-1990s an Island couple, Frank and Miye Yoshitake, former nursery owners, designed a landscape plan for it. The Nordland Garden Club agreed to provide the maintenance and placed a plaque in dedication to the Yoshitakes. The “Welcome Triangle,” as it is called today, proudly and beautifully greets residents as they come home, and visitors as they arrive to enjoy all Marrowstone Island has to offer.
